PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The calls have been flooding in from worried motorists — who’s hauling those giant boulders chained to giant trailers through some of the Portland area’s heaviest traffic? And why?
The Oregonian says the 35-ton boulders are headed to the Oregon coast, where the Port of Garibaldi is using them to repair Tillamook Bay’s north jetty.
The $16.1 million stimulus-funded project will improve treacherous coastal waters that have claimed the lives of 20 fishermen since 1992. Tillamook County Commissioner Tim Josi says it’s “great to see the big rocks finally arriving.”
The project calls for 1,100 boulders from two Washington state quarries, with three a day rolling through Portland until August.
