Prep roundup: Skyview boys beat Heritage for league title

A balanced effort helped lift the Skyview boys basketball team to the outright Class 4A Greater St. Helens League title as the Storm defeated visiting Heritage 69-56 on Thursday.

Consecutive 3-pointers from Tyler Paluck, Jordan Chatman and Sam Perry in the third quarter helped the Storm pull away after trailing by one at halftime.

Skyview (13-7, 8-2 4A GSHL) put the game away in the fourth quarter thanks to making 15 of 17 free throws.

Chatman led the Storm in scoring with 17 points, Paluck and Perry each had 11.

Ben Lyons scored 15 points, and C.J. Hatchett 14 for Heritage (3-17, 1-9).

Battle Ground 66, Kelso 48 — Chad Futrell starred on senior night with 21 points and five rebounds as the Tigers defeated visiting Kelso.

Battle Ground (10-9, 5-5 4A GSHL) played solid defense in the second half to pull away from Kelso. Futrell scored 11 points in the second half on 5 of 5 shooting, and as a team, the Tigers were 11 for 13 from the free-throw line in the second half to ice the game.

Rashad Rollins had 21 points for Kelso (11-9, 6-4).

Mountain View 62, Evergreen 40 — The Thunder pulled away in the second half to earn a share of second place in the Class 4A GSHL. Mountain View outscored host Evergreen 21-11 in the third quarter to lead 43-30.

Lucas Swanson led the Thunder with 21 points, and Andrew White added 13. Mountain View made eight 3-pointers to only one for the Plainsmen. Caleb Dresler scored 14 for Evergreen.

Prairie 55, Columbia River 43 — Hot shooting in the first half by the Falcons propelled them past host Columbia River.

Prairie (11-9, 7-3 3A GSHL) was 14 for 15 from the field in building a 35-21 advantage at halftime. Adam Herman paced the Falcons with 20 points, and Karl Pavelic added 11.

Columbia River (8-12, 1-9) was led in scoring by Kramer Ramberg’s 13 points, and Isaiah Smith had 12.

King’s Way Christian 68, Seton Catholic 38 — King’s Way took control in the second quarter to win the Columbia Valley League playoff game and a spot in the Class 1A district tournament. The Knights will open district play at 7 p.m. Monday at Lower Columbia College in Longview against Lake Quinault or Oakville.

Matt Johnson scored 20 points to lead a balanced King’s Way offense on Thursday. The Knights led by 22 at halftime.

Conor McDaid-O’Neill scored 14 for Seton Catholic.

Girls basketball

Prairie 69, Columbia River 63 — The Falcons needed an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter to erase a five-point deficit and finish the league season unbeaten.

Columbia River, who was led by Kass Cloyd’s 19 points, led 48-44 after three quarters and pushed the lead to five in the fourth before Prairie went on its run.

Angela Gelhar finished with a game-high 27 points and shot 11 for 12 from the free throw line.

Lauren Goecke had 19 points and six assists. Andrea Smith had eight rebounds, while Meghan Lindsley and Kelsey Asplund added seven each.

Evergreen 40, Mountain View 38 — Justine Joudrey’s heroics lifted the Plainsmen to second place in the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League.

Joudrey scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, eight of them as Evergreen rallied from a seven-point deficit with less than three minutes left in the game. Joudrey finished with 19 points, and had three 3-pointers down the stretch.

Shamerica Scott had a key rebound basket in the final minute for Evergreen, which finished alone in second place to secure a bye into the district tournament semifinals.

Carly Holboke paced visiting Mountain View with 24 points. She made five 3-pointers, four of them in the first half.

Kelso 59, Battle Ground 48 — Carly Perkins scored 15 points and Mackenzie Martin 12 to lead Kelso. Haley Grossman led Battle Ground in scoring with 19 points.

Camas 43, Union 33 — Melissa Williams scored 16 points, and second-place Camas completed league play with a win over the visiting Titans. Katelyn Henson added 10 points for the Papermakers, who built a 21-10 halftime lead. Brittany Blumenthal led Union with 10 points.

Hudson’s Bay 57, Fort Vancouver 36 — Eight players scored, four of them in double figures, as the host Eagles beat the Trappers. Lexi Gleason led the way with 18 points. For Fort, Mar’shay Moore scored 13 points.

Woodland 71, Mark Morris 41 — The Beavers hit five 3-pointers in the first quarter and four more in the second, helping them clinch a share of their 12th league championship in the past 14 years.

Kylie Moses was 4 for 7 from 3-point range and had 16 points, six rebounds and three assists. Taylor McCullough had five assists, six steals and 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point range. The Beavers were 11 for 20 from 3-point range as a team.

The win improve Woodland to 8-0 in the 2A GSHL, a full two games ahead of second-place Ridgefield with two games to go. The Beavers face the Spudders on Tuesday.

Washougal 70, Hockinson 63 (OT) — Alicia McElroy scored 34 points on senior night, 30 in the second half and overtime as the Panthers withstood visiting Hockinson.

Washougal (7-11, 2-6 2A GSHL) led by 15 points with 2:12 to play in regulation and Hockinson’s Amanda McCarty made three 3-points in the final 2 minutes, and then the Hawks (5-13, 3-5) tied the game at the buzzer to send it into overtime.

Darcy Akers hit a key 3-pointer in overtime to push the Washougal lead to five and the Panthers cruised from there.

McElroy added nine rebounds and seven steals to her effort.

Ashley Haden had a big night for Hockinson with 31 points. McCarty finished with 19.

Ridgefield 59, R.A. Long 55, 2OT — Shelby Williams had 23 points and 20 rebounds as the Spudders prevailed in two overtimes. The final score marked the only time a period ended with one of the teams leading by more than one point.

Nichole Kates scored seven of her 17 points after the end of regulation for Ridgefield. Sadie Petersen led R.A. Long with 21 points.

Washington School for Deaf 35, Three Rivers Christian 34 — Olivia Mackey capped a 24-point game with a steal and a layup with five seconds left, sending WSD into the Class 1B district tournament.

The Terriers will face Wishkah at 3 p.m. Monday at Lower Columbia Community College in Longview in the first round of the district playoffs.
