Weather Eye: Refreshing respite from the rain is history

Looks like some clouds and showers are back in the picture but nothing really heavy and not enough snow in the mountains to make much of a dent — just enough to whiten things up. The first storm today falls apart as it moves inland. A stronger storm is forecasts to arrive late Thursday, with the lion’s share heading into California in typical El Nino fashion.

And speaking of the lion, what will the merry month of March deliver to us next Monday? There are some computer models that suggest March will roll in like a lion and others are a bit more sheepish. Even though we return to a more westerly flow, the split flow pattern with weather systems shearing apart will continue. So if you look at the extended weather outlook, you’ll probably see a chance of rain or showers for the next seven days. I do think the weekend may end up being nice, but then again, that is several days away.

We did have some frosty weather the past few days more in line with the winter season, with beautiful daytime temperatures way above normal. I recorded a low of 25 degrees early Monday morning but little in the way of frost due to the very dry air mass brought on by easterly winds delivering dry continental air east of the Cascades.

I have seen many daffodils up and in full bloom.

And speaking of flowers, you all have heard the old saying, “April showers bring May flowers.” But did you know the original folklore included the month of March. It goes like this, “March winds and April showers bring forth Mayflowers.” Remember that on a blustery March day.
