Pacific Middle School officials are investigating the claims of a 12-year-old boy who admitted he brought a handgun to school to protect himself and friends from a bully, according to the Clark County Sheriffs Office.

Sgt. Craig Randall said the boy displayed a knife at school Monday and on Wednesday and Thursday showed off an unloaded handgun.

One of the boys classmates reported the gun to parents Wednesday and they informed school officials.

School officials recovered the gun from the boys backpack Thursday morning.

The firearm wasn’t serviceable immediately but could have been, Randall said. He did have magazines that were not in the weapon, but in the backpack.

Randall said the boys claim that he had been the victim of a bully has not been confirmed. School and sheriffs officials do not believe the boy displayed the gun in a threatening or intimidating manner.
