Portland fugitive arrested in Southwest

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A Portland man accused of compelling girls into prostitution has been arrested in New Mexico.

U.S. Marshals arrested 33-year-old Jammie Smith on Thursday as he walking out of an Albuquerque grocery store with his mother and a woman sought on prostitution charges.

Smith was wanted on warrants linked to rape, sodomy, sex abuse and forcing prostitution.

Portland police started investigating Smith after girls ranging in age from 13 to 16 said he forced them into prostitution.

Smith is being held in the Bernalillo County Jail in New Mexico, where he will await extradition proceedings. Bail is $1.2 million.
