ESTACADA, Ore. (AP) — A 30-year-old Oregon man who fell out of his kayak in the icy, rain-swollen Clackamas River near Estacada was rescued by a Clackamas Fire District 1 water-rescue crew that just happened to be training nearby.

Fire District spokesman Steve McAdoo says the Oak Grove man was exhausted when the rescue crew pulled him into their boat Monday. McAdoo says the man was wearing a life jacket but it was unzipped and unbuckled. The kayak was upside down in the water and he couldn’t flip it over.

McAdoo warns rafter, canoers and kayakers that the river is running high because of recent rains and is fed by snowmelt so it’s very cold.
