MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Brewers officially hired Ron Roenicke as manager Thursday, giving the 54-year-old longtime Angels coach a two-year contract with a club option for 2013.

This is Roenicke’s first manager job at the major league level. He’s spent the past 11 years with the Angels, including the previous five as bench coach.

Former Mets manager Bobby Valentine, former Mariners and Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin and White Sox bench coach Joey Cora also were considered for the job.

General manager Doug Melvin says he’s confident Roenicke will develop an organizational culture that fosters teamwork. The former first-round draft pick played eight seasons in the majors as an outfielder before beginning his coaching career.
