PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A Portland flooring contractor has been fined $10,800 for removing asbestos tiles without a license.
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality said Thursday that Contract Flooring & Interiors was removing carpet on the Hewlett-Packard campus in Corvallis last summer when workers disturbed nearly 500 vinyl tiles containing asbestos.
The agency says disturbing the tiles likely released asbestos fibers into the air, which can cause lung cancer.
The company has until Nov. 15 to appeal the fine.
