Loyola (Md.) beats Maryland-Baltimore County 83-72

BALTIMORE (AP) — Dylon Cormier scored a career-high 20 points and Loyola (Md.) defeated Maryland-Baltimore County 83-72 on Wednesday night.

Cormier had seven straight points during an 11-0 Greyhounds’ run in the second half. After the Retrievers (0-2) cut it to 60-57 on Justin Fry’s layup with 10:22 to play, Loyola used the run to pull away. Erik Etherly’s dunk capped the spurt for a 71-57 lead with 7:17 remaining.

Etherly finished with 16 points, Jamal Barney had 14 and J’hared Hall chipped in 11 for Loyola. Barney also had 10 rebounds as the Greyhounds won the battle of the boards 42-28.

Loyola shot 51 percent from the field (25 of 49), and 82.9 percent from the free-throw line (29 for 35). Cormier was 9 of 10 from the foul line.

Travis King led UMBC with 22 points. The Retrievers shot 38.2 percent in the first half (13 of 34) and trailed 41-34 at the break.
