OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Gov. Chris Gregoire has been elected chairwoman of the National Governors Association, becoming the second woman elected to the position.
The decision was announced Wednesday. Gregoire replaces West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin, who was elected to the U.S. Senate. Gregoire’s term will continue until the association’s next annual meeting in Salt Lake City in July.
Gregoire says she is honored by the decision of her fellow governors. She says she will also lead an initiative launched by the group last year to increase the number of U.S. students who complete college degrees and post-secondary certificates.
