LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky and coach Matthew Mitchell have agreed to a contract extension that will pay him $600,000 annually.

Mitchell is 63-40 in three season with the Wildcats, leading the program to within one game of the Final Four a year ago when he was named Southeastern Conference coach of the year.

The contract starts with a $600,000 base salary, with an opportunity for performance-based incentives. The deal will be rolled over each April.

Athletic director Mitch Barnhart says Mitchell has done a “remarkable” job with the Wildcats. Mitchell said the contract is a sign from the administration that he is taking the program in the right direction.

Kentucky is 2-0 and the ninth-ranked Wildcats host No. 12 Notre Dame on Sunday.
