Nicholls State holds off SE Louisiana 27-25

THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — LaQuintin Caston rushed for 139 yards and three touchdowns as Nicholls State held off Southeastern Louisiana 27-25 on Thursday night in the season finale for both teams.

Jordan Piper batted down a 2-point conversion attempt by Lions quarterback Tyler Beatty after Beatty scored on a 1-yard run with 2:19 left. The Colonels then recovered an onside kick and ran out the clock.

Caston had scoring runs of 7 yards and 1 yard in the first half to stake Nicholls State (4-7, 3-4 Southland Conference) to a 14-0 lead at intermission in the River Bell Classic.

Caston scored his third TD on a 43-yard rush for a 27-19 lead with 4:23 to go after Southeastern Louisiana (2-9, 1-6) twice made it a one-point game.

Caston also completed 11 of 19 passes for 113 yards.

Beatty completed 19 of 43 passes for 321 yards and one TD, a 24-yarder to Simmie Yarborough to open the second half.
