ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) — The artwork for Astoria’s Garden of Surging Waves is finally here.

Last Thursday, crews unloaded the eight white granite pillars, several bronze castings and other pieces that were handmade in China and shipped to Los Angeles in August.

The new Chinese garden in Astoria is both a bicentennial legacy gift and a way to honor the Chinese immigrants who helped to build Astoria.

Astoria Mayor Willis Van Dusen says the immigrants who built the sea wall, the jetties and railroads, and who helped establish the fish farming industry and canneries in Astoria, haven’t been properly recognized.

The artwork will be unveiled at an Oct. 16 celebration in Astoria. The garden will be constructed sometime next year, when more funding is in place.
