3A GSHL football: Mountain View rolls past Fort Vancouver

Jeff Carmody, Ryan Hansen, Sterling Reynolds and their Mountain View teammates wasted no time distancing themselves from Fort Vancouver on Friday at Kiggins Bowl.

On the game’s second play, Carmody caught a pass from Hansen for 33 yards. Three plays later he hustled around left end for an 8-yard touchdown and the Thunder was of and running to a 56-7 win in a Class 3A Greater St. Helens League football game.

Star of the game: Jeff Carmody had an 8-run TD run and set up two more scores with an interception and a 34-yard punt return for Mountain View.

What’s next: Mountain View vs. Kelso; Fort Vancouver at Columbia River.

The Thunder used big plays on offense, defense and special teams to roll.

Hansen threw for 126 yards and two touchdowns in the first half and ran for another score in the third quarter.

Reynolds caught a 39-yard scoring pass and ran for two touchdowns.

Carmody did a little bit of everything. On defense, intercepted Fort Vancouver’s Richard Vansiclen to set up the second of three first-quarter touchdowns for Mountain View.

In the second quarter, a nifty 34-yard Carmody punt return set up another Mountain View touchdown.

Making the most of positive field position, Thunder quarterback Hansen completed 4 of 5 first-half passes for two touchdowns and 126 yards. He found Reynolds for with a perfect 39-yard rainbow throw for a TD, and tight end Ryan Johnson for a pair of 27-yard plays, one of those a touchdown.

“They outplayed us,” Fort Vancouver coach Cal Szueber said. “Mountain View deserved everything tonight. They came hard and our kids didn’t.”

The Mountain View defense also got in on the fun. The Thunder had four takeaways, highighted by a 78-yard pick-six by Mark Hartley.

The Thunder outgained the Trappers 359-197. They improved to 4-2, 2-1 in 3A GSHL play. Mountain view hosts Kelso next week in a key league game.

Fort Vancouver’s roller-coaster season hit a low patch on Friday.

After battling back against Kelso a week ago, the Trappers (2-4, 0-3 GSHL) showed little fight against the Thunder.

“We’re a better team than we played like tonight,” Szueber said.

Fort Vancouver backup quarterback Hayden Heying hooked up with Daniel Hernandez for a 38-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.
