Fire ruined the first floor of a split-level house in south Hazel Dell Tuesday night.

The blaze at 7409 N.W. Vista Ave. broke out at 7:51, said Dawn Johnson with Clark County Fire District 6.

She said a 49-year-old man who rents the first floor made a fire in the fireplace, went to a store, and returned to find that the fire was out of control and had ignited a mattress.

Twelve firefighters fought the blaze, which also caused smoke damage to the rest of the house.

“The damage is going to be pretty significant,” Johnson said.

Johnson said the owner, a woman, lives upstairs but was not home when the fire broke out.

The man was treated for smoke inhalation but refused further medical attention, Johnson said. She said the man went to stay with a friend.

The home is owned by Sonya L. Norton, according to county property records.
