Prep notebook: Columbia River, La Center boys run to titles at Seaside meet

Hockinson, La Center girls place second in their divisions

The Columbia River and La Center boys won divisional titles and the Hockinson and La Center girls also placed high Saturday at the Seaside Three-Course Challenge.

Columbia River won the Division 2 boys title, outdistancing Burlington-Edison 173-280. River was the only local team in Division 2.

The La Center boys won the Division 4 title with 267 points to beat Sisters, Ore. with 371. Woodland placed 13th in Division 4 and Ridgefield ran incomplete. Other local boys teams at Seaside included: Camas (fourth), Union (10th), Battle Ground (11th), Heritage (22nd) in Division 1; Hockinson (13th) in Division 3; and Seton Catholic (10th) in Division 5.

The Hockinson girls placed second in Division 3 with 635 points, just eight behind Sweet Home, Ore. The La Center girls placed second in Division 4 (339), finishing behind Cascade of Turner, Ore. (292).

Other local girls teams included: Camas (sixth), Battle Ground (seventh), Heritage (15th) and Union (incomplete) in Division 1; Columbia River (seventh) in Division 2; Ridgefield (eighth) and Woodland (incomplete) in Division 4; and Seton Catholic (incomplete) in Division 5.

Local runners who placed high in the Division I boys races were Preston Bahr of Heritage (third, easy course); Andrew and Kaler of Camas (sixth, hard).

Columbia River had all seven runners place in the top 10 in their respective races: Markus Duhamel (second, easy), Nicolas McMillan (10th, easy), Jon Rapacz (fifth, moderate), Anthony Lee (seventh, moderate), Ryan Lisowski (fourth, hard), Brian Piette (fifth, hard) and Heath Meler (seventh, hard).

Moises Sebastian of La Center won the boys Division 4 race on the easy course. He was followed by teammate Jorge Alvarez of La Center (fifth). Other Wildcat runners placing high in Division 4 were Kyle Kosak (third, moderate), Kyle Degraff of La Center (second, hard), and Colten Fox of La Center (fifth, hard).

Placing high in the Division 1 girls races Kaitlyn McKinney (fourth, moderate), and Austen Reiter of Camas (fifth, moderate).

Hockinson’s Hannah Barclay (easy) and Jadyn Gourley (moderate) both finished second in their Division 3 races. Chantalle Blundell was fourth in the hard race. Amanda Blankenship of La Center won the Division 4 hard race. Teammates with high places also included Ashlie Beed (second, easy), Lucy Lyons (fifth, easy) and Miranda Bierscheid (third, moderate).

Skyview, Camas volleyball in Kent Classic

Skyview and Camas will be part of the expanded Kent Classic volleyball tournament at Kentlake and Kentwood high schools on Saturday.

The field has been expanded from 27 to 30 teams. Among ranked state teams competing are Jackson, Monroe, Olympia, Mount Si, Bishop Blanchet, Eastside Catholic and Seattle Prep.

Pool play begins at 8 a.m. with bracket play at 4 p.m. The championship match is set for 6 p.m. at Kentlake.

Athletes of the week

FOOTBALL, Riley O’Dell, Heritage: The quarterback completed 18 of 23 passes for 273 and two touchdowns in the Timberwolves’ overtime loss to Skyview.

VOLLEYBALL, Rachel Krueger, Skyview: Krueger had 20 kills and eight blocks in two league wins for the Storm.

GIRLS SOCCER, Ellie Boon, Washougal: The sophomore score all seven of the Panthers’ goals in wins over R.A. Long and Hockinson.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY, Colby Gilbert, Skyview: Gilbert won a four-way meet at Camas and placed ninth in his flight, posting the Storm’s top time at the New Balance Festival of Champions.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY, Jadyn Gourley, Hockinson: Gourley placed second in the Division 3 moderate-course race to help the Hawks place second.

GIRLS SWIMMING, Peggy Liang, Mountain View: Liang won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly in state-qualifying times last week.

BOYS GOLF, Tanner Maahs, Prairie: Maahs shot an even-par 72 and placed second in a playoff hole at the Thunder Invitational at Rose City Golf Course.

BOYS TENNIS, John Ebert, Heritage: Ebert scored a pair of straight-set victories from the No. 1 singles spot in matches against Skyview and Evergreen.
