Letter: Beware effects of same-sex marriage

The Columbian
Published: April 17, 2011, 12:00am

The April 10 column, “False alarm: DADT repeal not so bad,” by John Laird rightly points out the obvious: Traditional marriage has already been damaged by heterosexuals themselves who have failed to live up to their marriage vows to “love, honor and respect as long as we both shall live.” That being said, what exactly do heterosexuals get out of promoting same-sex marriage? How about psychological permission and social encouragement for violating traditional moral norms that restrict sexual expression to the lifelong commitment of one man and one woman open to procreating and educating children? Broken families, marital discord, and children without parents are the consequences.

Laird’s column clearly jumps on the bandwagon of pro-same-sex marriage being advertised on local TV. Basing legal recognition of same-sex marriage upon the willingness of two people of the same sex to publicly declare their love for one another will open the door to other taboo-breaking arrangements and sexual behaviors, some of which are currently criminally prosecuted.
