TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey’s top election official is taking a few more days to decide whether nine-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis can pursue his bid for state Senate.

Republican Secretary of State Kim Guadagno (gwah-DAHN’-oh) had been expected to decide Thursday whether the Democratic former track star meets New Jersey’s four-year residency requirement for candidates. But a spokesman for Guadagno says the decision has been delayed until next week.

Republicans challenged Lewis’ bid to represent the 8th Legislative District in south-central New Jersey.

Lewis has voted in California until recently. But the 49-year-old has owned homes in New Jersey since 2005.

An administrative law judge has recommended Lewis be allowed to run in the June primary.

Guadagno’s decision can be appealed to the appellate division.
