[SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith has cut his left middle finger during practice, and left to have it checked out by the club’s medical staff.

After practice, coach Ron Rivera wasn’t exactly sure of the extent of the injury.

“They wanted to check it out and he may get an X-ray,” Rivera said.

Smith is the team’s all-time leader in touchdowns and is expected to play a key role in Carolina’s offense this season.
