PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The race to replace disgraced Rep. David Wu is taking shape as a Monday deadline approaches for candidates to file papers declaring their intent to run for office.

Four major candidates have said they want the job. The three Democrats and one Republican are feverishly racing to raise money, grab endorsements and introduce themselves to voters before a Nov. 8 special primary election.

Wu touched off the rare special election this month when he resigned amid pressure from fellow Democrats following published allegations that he had an unwanted sexual encounter with an 18-year-old woman. He has not publicly commented on the allegations.

The four major candidates all say they expect the campaign to be focused heavily on jobs and the economy.
