Weather Eye: Fair weather’s in store — until the weekend gets here

Did that morning fog Wednesday give you false hopes of clear skies and sunshine? Well, the fog lifted nicely by midmorning, and we were treated to a picture-perfect winter afternoon. One could see a bit of snow on our foothills to the east, and the Cascade peaks were sporting a new mantle of white.

Today will be a repeat of yesterday but with slowly rising temperatures. Friday also will deliver fair weather. The weekend, I’m afraid, will see clouds and rain continuing into next week. The mountains will get more snow, and as time goes on, snow levels will lower, dusting our foothills.

Temperatures next week appear more seasonal or even slightly below.

I have received e-mails from several readers that they heard we might get really cold and snow next week. Yes, things will be cooler as we enter into a northwest flow, but at this time I don’t believe snow levels will drop to the valley floor, and certainly no solid arctic air mass shrouding over us. Of course things could develop differently.

Meanwhile, the Oregon Chapter of the American Meteorology Society will meet Saturday at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Clackamas, Ore. The public is invited for the event from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Kyle Dittmer and Chris Beltrone will present “Did the Iceland Volcano Impact our 2010 Weather?” For details and meal reservations, visit http://www.ametsoc.org/chapters/oregon/index.html.
