Black Hills’ physical defense knocked Hockinson off its game and sent the Hawks to a 62-47 loss in the first round of the Class 2A district tournament Saturday in Hockinson.

The Wolves from Tumwater limited Hockinson’s Josh Hall to five points in the first half as Black Hills built a 22-14 lead.

“Black Hills did a good job of slowing down Josh … and not letting us do what we normally do,” Hockinson coach Matt Gruhler said. “We only scored 14 points in the first half, and that’s just not going to get it done.”

Anye Turner, a 6-foot-6 senior, led the Wolves with 21 points, while Hall had 18 to pace the Hawks.

Gruhler said he knew Black Hills was better than its 7-11 record.

“We knew this was a wild-card team,” he said. “Turner, their best player, had missed a bunch of games, and so did (Caleb) Montelongo. We knew they were better than a fifth seed. They were fired up and played like a team that was favored to win.”

Hockinson, which had its six-game winning streak snapped, will face R.A. Long in a loser-out game Wednesday. It will be the fourth meeting between the two teams, with Hockinson winning the most recent two matchups.

Onalaska 63, Ridgefield 45 — Sam Landerholm scored 19 points, and Michael Potter had 17, but the Spudders dropped into the consolation bracket with the loss in Chehalis.

Ridgefield will face Trico League rival Ilwaco on Wednesday in a loser-out game.

Evergreen finished with 135 points, well behind first-place Lake Stevens (203.5) but ahead of league rival Union, which was third at 125.

Union’s Dillon Thomas (171) and Max Proudfit (285) won regional titles as the Titans qualified five wrestlers for state.

Also claiming a regional title was Heritage’s Austin Frazier at 125. Skyview’s Clint Powers dropped a 6-4 decision to Ryan Deweese of Edmonds-Woodway in the final at 130 pounds.

Brendan Casey placed second at 160 to lead Washougal to a fifth-place team finish. The Panthers advanced four wrestlers to next week’s state tournament.

Union scored 444 points to outdistance Skyview’s 395.

Robbie Natemeier (100 freestyle) and Joel Pinnock (50 freestyle) also swam to district titles for Union, earning automatic berths to next week’s state meet in Federal Way.
