Schoenlein beat out Faith Tarrant of Prairie to win weekly honor

Skyview wrestler JJ Schoenlein is The Columbian 2023-24 Week 19 high school athlete of the week, sponsored by Killer Burger.

Schoenlein received 2,701 of the 5,366 votes cast to win the honor.

The junior overcame a bout of myelitis last summer to claim his second consecutive state title, winning the 175-pound crown at the Class 4A state tournament in Tacoma.

Here are what the other Week 19 nominees accomplished:

JONAS DESROCHERS, SKYVIEW WRESTLING: The freshman rallied to beat reigning champion Curtis Carlisle of Rogers-Puyallup to win the 113-pound state title.

MASON DESROCHERS, SKYVIEW WRESTLING: The freshman held on for a 1-0 win over Owen Marshall of Tahoma to win the 120-pound state title.

OWEN PRITCHARD, SKYVIEW WRESTLING: After two top-3 finishes, the senior beat Juan Hoffman of Kamiakin to claim the 126-pound state title.

FAITH TARRANT, PRAIRIE WRESTLING: The junior completed another undefeated season and earned her third state title with a second-round pin of Katherine Peterson of Tahoma.
