Outgoing councilor recommends elected Bend mayor

BEND, Ore. (AP) — Outgoing Bend City Councilor Oran Teater says he has some last advice: make the mayor an elected job.

Teater says it would not only allow Bend residents to choose the person they want to represent their community for four years, it will add continuity to a position that now turns over every two years.

Teater, who decided not to run for re-election in November, had the same advice in 2005 when he was mayor.

But he told The Bulletin newspaper the time has come for a change — and he says electing a mayor has gained a lot of community support.

Bend’s mayor is currently chosen by the seven-member city council but doesn’t hold any more power than other councilors while acting as a ceremonial head of the city.
