PUYALLUP, Wash. (AP) — The discovery of what appear to be several homemade explosive devices in a rural area of Puyallup (pew-AL’-up), Wash., prompted authorities to divert traffic during the Friday evening commute and evacuate several houses.

Puyallup police, the Pierce County sheriff’s bomb squad and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms responded.

ATF Agent Cheryl Bishop tells KIRO-TV that information about the devices came in a tip. She says the man who apparently put the devices in that spot is believed to be dead.

Puyallup police Capt. Scott Engle describes the area to The News Tribune as “kind of an open field near a pump house” on the east side of the city.

Puyallup is southeast of Tacoma.
