HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) — A Washington County, Ore., sheriff’s spokesman says a county jail inmate has committed suicide by stabbing himself in the arm with a pencil, hitting an artery.
Sgt. Vance Stimler says 40-year-old Alexander Jay was convicted last month on several sex crime charges. Court records indicate the crimes involved child victims. Jay was found unconscious in his cell Friday morning and died despite efforts to revive him. He had faced sentencing Friday afternoon.
Washington County Deputy District Attorney Paul Maloney says he had planned to request a sentence of more than 100 years, to be served after a sex crimes sentence Jay received last year in Marion County.
The Oregonian says Jay was held in a single cell with a secure door.
