CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says he is no enemy of golf despite his concerns about elite golf courses on prime urban real estate in Caracas.

Chavez made the remarks while congratulating Venezuelan golfer Jhonattan Vegas on his win in the Bob Hope Classic.

His government has closed six courses in recent years, all but one of them on land owned by the state oil company — including a course where Vegas learned to play.

The leftist leader said in a televised speech Tuesday: “I’m not an enemy of golf.”

He says he just opposes the fact that “a group of very rich people” with a large spread of golf courses “there in the heart of Caracas.”

Chavez has suggested the land could be used for housing.
