TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — The district office of Sen. Patty Murray has been evacuated after a staffer found a suspicious envelope in the mail.
Tacoma Police Det. Gretchen Aguirre (ah-GEER’-ee) says the letter-sized envelope contains a sand-like substance and the staff member was concerned about the return address. Aguirre says nothing has come out of the envelope and she wasn’t sure what about the return address was suspicious.
Murray was not in the office on Thursday when her staff called police to check out the envelope. Aguirre says fire officials did a preliminary check of the envelope and then called the postal service to pick it up. She says the envelope came through the regular mail and had already gone through the post office’s regular hazardous materials screening.
A call to Murray’s Washington, D.C., office asking for comment was not immediately returned Thursday afternoon.
