In the June 14 letter “Return respect to Oval Office,” Lynn Costello’s first argument about respect by clothing is ridiculous. These kinds of petty objections have been going on for decades from people who have no basis for them other than prejudice.
Then the statement, “Our current president mocks citizens who are worried about security on our borders.” Oh, really? Quoting the July 26, 2010, Washington Post: “The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency expects to deport about 400,000 people this fiscal year, nearly 10 percent above the Bush administration’s 2008 total and 25 percent more than were deported in 2007. The pace of company audits has roughly quadrupled since President George W. Bush’s final year in office.” Without going into the increased border patrol enforcement expansion, is this Costello’s definition of Obama’s mocking worries about security on our borders?
I am a life-long Republican who clearly remembers “We Want Wilkie” and has voted the straight Republican ticket ever since, but I’m ashamed of the right wing’s disrespect of the president of the United States. I also yearn for respect for the office but am also deeply concerned about the right wing’s continuous bashing not just of Obama, but of the presidency itself.
Costello yearns for respect? Please show some.
