SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle city attorney has filed a lawsuit over a referendum on the planned downtown tunnel for Highway 99.
KING reports the suit filed Tuesday afternoon asks the King County Superior Court to determine if agreements the city has signed with the state are subject to a referendum.
A group that hopes to force a public vote submitted 29,000 signatures Tuesday morning to the city clerk.
“Protect Seattle Now” says that’s more than enough to make the ballot in August. The referendum would overturn the city’s agreements with the state to replace the earthquake-vulnerable Alaskan Way Viaduct with the tunnel.
