Prep roundup: Westphal’s seventh-inning home run sends Mountain View to district final

Thunder win after losing five-run lead against Kelso

Cameron Westphal’s walkoff solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Mountain View a 7-6 victory over Kelso in Class 3A district tournament play Wednesday at Propstra Field.

No. 3 seed Kelso tied the game with a five-run fourth inning before second-seeded Mountain View reclaimed the lead in the fifth. The Hilanders added a single run in the top of the seventh inning before the Thunder won in the bottom half.

The bases were empty with one out when Westfall ended the game.

With the victory, Mountain View advances to today’s district championship game against No. 1 Camas. The title game is set for 4 p.m. at Propstra.

Dean Taylor pitched two innings of relief for the win, while Justin Sanders took the loss in four innings of relief work.

Westphal was 2 for 4, while Riley O’Dell was 1 for 2 with a double and drove in three runs for Mountain View. Thunder starting pitcher P.J. Jones was 2 for 2 with a double and score three runs. Jones worked five innings, leaving a 5-5 game.

Hockinson 12, Woodland 3 — Connor Perry went 2 for 3 with two doubles and five RBI to help Hockinson clinch second place in the 2A Greater St. Helens League.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Hawks, who finished one game behind Mark Morris in the 2A GSHL.

Hockinson will open the 2A district tournament with a home game on Tuesday against the 2A Evergreen Conference’s No. 3 team.

Ridgefield 14, Castle Rock 4 — Trailing by two runs in the bottom of the sixth, Ridgefield exploded for 12 runs to beat Castle Rock with the mercy rule in a Class 1A Trico League tiebreaker game.

The victory gives the Spudders the No. 3 seed from the Trico to next week’s district tournament.

Ridgefield will play the 1A Evergreen Conference’s No. 2 in the first round of the 1A district tournament Tuesday at Castle Rock.

Castle Rock will play La Center at 4:30 p.m. today at Castle Rock to decide the fourth and final Trico League berth to the district tournament.

Marcus Deal was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI for the Spudders.

Softball

R.A. Long 3, Hockinson 2 — CC Beverly hit a two-out, two-run inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, but R.A. Long pushed across a run in the eighth to win it.

The loss dropped Hockinson to 3-5 in Class 2A Greater St. Helens League play, one game behind R.A. Long.
