PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — At a Monday night hearing, some Portland parents questioned the school district’s plan to change the high school daily schedule to cut teachers.
The Oregonian reports the district will require teachers to teach six of eight periods, up from five of seven. That allows the nine high schools to offer the same number of classes with fewer teachers — a cut of 45 in all.
But to prevent class sizes from increasing too much, the district will limit most students to seven or fewer classes. And that will leave students with a 90-minute “hole” — an empty class — in every student’s schedule every other day.
The school board plans to vote May 23rd on the budget.
