Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life on Friday to free a woman from a mangled car involved in a head-on collision in Vancouver’s Parkside neighborhood.

The crash was reported at 8:45 a.m. at the intersection of Northeast 32nd Circle and 138th Avenue. Once the woman was out of her vehicle, she was transported “trauma alert” to Southwest Washington Medical Center. That means firefighters called the hospital’s emergency department to let physicians know the patients were coming with serious injuries.

The woman’s identity was not available. Involved in the wreck were the woman’s tan sedan and a light blue sedan.

The female driver of the other vehicle was also taken to the hospital. Her injuries were believed to be minor, said Capt. Scott Willis, a Vancouver Fire Department spokesman.

There were no other passengers.

A fire engine from the Pacific Park station, 1501 N.E. 164th Ave., was the first to respond. Firefighters called a unit from the Sifton station, 6701 NE 147th Ave., to supply the Jaws of Life.

Willis said firefighters from the Sifton engine used thei extrication tool to free the woman from her crushed car and then left it with the other Vancouver company to respond to a structure fire at 8518 N.E. 129th Ave.

Details on how the crash occurred were not immediately available. The Vancouver Police Department is investigating.
