Letter: Remember Baird’s independence?

The Columbian
Published: May 15, 2011, 12:00am

During the 2010 campaign, Jaime Herrera Beutler assured voters that she was an independent voice for Southwest Washington. Yet her votes have been in lockstep with Republicans in Washington, D.C. Please, Congresswoman Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, explain to your district how supporting $15,000 vouchers for medical care shows your willingness to be an independent voice. Please explain how you can vote for something based purely on ideology and not on what a majority of Americans support, strengthening Medicare.

We are used to having courageous and independent representation in our district. Former representative Brian Baird didn’t back down to party pressures on many controversial votes. He understood that his job was not to move up the party chain of command, but to represent all citizens of Southwest Washington. He understood that leadership is more than just political talking points and moving up in the polls. He held dozens of town hall meetings, every year.

It seems as though Herrera-Beutler is representing the wrong Washington in Washington, D.C.
