West to be more than ‘figurehead’ with Warriors

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Jerry West says he will be more than just a “figurehead” in his new role as an adviser to the Golden State Warriors and a member of the team’s executive board.

The Warriors officially introduced West on Tuesday at a ritzy San Francisco hotel. West says he will be no “shrinking violet” when it comes to sharing his opinions with owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber or general manager Larry Riley.

But West, who built some of the NBA’s best teams during his tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers, will not be the ultimate decision-maker with Golden State.

This move is just the latest by the new owners, who are hoping to rebuild a franchise that has been in the playoffs just once since 1994.
