Brynne Dykes scored with a header off a corner kick in the second half to send the La Center girls soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Elma in a loser-out match Tuesday in the Class 1A district playoffs in Kalama.

Megan Vansoest hit the corner kick, which rebounded off an Elma player before Dykes headed it into the goal.

Dykes also had a first-half assist on a goal by Kirsten Watkins as La Center and Elma played a back-and-forth affair.

“We weren’t exactly playing like shining stars,” La Center coach Herm van Weerdhuizen said. “But in district, you’re going to play some tough teams. Elma played hard, but were able to get the goal in the second half and hang on. We did just enough to win.”

The victory sends the Wildcats into a match Thursday against Tenino at 5 p.m. at Kalama High School. The winner will earn the No. 3 seed from the district into next week’s Class 1A state tournament. The loser is eliminated.

Jocelyn Burgess scored La Center’s first goal off an assists for Katelyn Bigley.

W.F. West 2, Hockinson 1 — Two defensive lapses in the first half were too much to overcome as the Hawks fell in a semifinal match in the Class 2A district tournament in Battle Ground.

W.F. West of Chehalis scored two first-half goals off Hockinson miscues.

Hockinson battled back to make a game of it in the second half when Hannah Charles scored on an assist from Aurora Bodenhamer. But the Hawks could not manage the tying goal.

Hockinson will play Centralia at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in a loser-out match at Battle Ground’s District Stadium.

The Hawks must win that match, plus another Saturday against Mark Morris or Washougal to earn a berth to the 2A state tournament.

Washougal 3, Tumwater 2 — Ellie Boon scored three goals, including an unassisted goal in the second half the proved to be the difference as Washougal kept its season alive in the 2A district playoffs.

Washougal will play at Mark Morris on Thursday in a loser-out match. If the Panthers beat the Monarchs — a team that beat Washougal three times in the regular season — Washougal would play the Hockinson-Centralia winner on Thursday for a berth to the state tournament.

Kelso 4, Mountain View 1 — Abby Creagan scored on an assists from Brittney Crase for the Thunder, who saw their season ended with a district playoff loss at Camas’ Doc Harris Stadium.
