A Washougal City Council challenger held on to a razor-thin lead in her race against incumbent Rod Morris, according to updated election results released Tuesday.

Caryn Plinski leads Morris by just six votes — 1,496 votes (48.8 percent) to 1,490 (48.6 percent). Earlier returns released after last week’s election showed the margin as close as two votes. Should the margin stay within 0.5 percent when the results are certified Nov. 29, an automatic recount would happen in December.

In Battle Ground, the city council race between Deputy Mayor Phil Haberthur and challenger Shane Bowman remains close, with Bowman leading by 115 votes.

Clark County Elections Supervisor Tim Likness said the county is still sorting out about 900 ballots in a “challenge state” — that is, ballots with missing signatures, unclear markings or other problems. Voters who have been notified have until Nov. 28 to clear them up and have them counted, he said.
