SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A Milwaukie man was killed when his car missed a curve and struck a tree, splitting the car in two.

The Salem Statesman Journal reports (http://bit.ly/pHlLOe ) 26-year-old Jesse Gaskin died at the scene west of Grand Ronde. A passenger, 25-year-old Jennifer Willis, suffered serious injuries.

The crash closed State Route 18 for five hours as the crash scene was cleared.

The front section of the car ended up on the side of the highway, while the second section — including the passenger compartment — landed upside-down and partially submerged in the Salmon River 40 feet away.

A state police sergeant says he saw the car reach 85 mph on the highway before the crash.
