Oregon scholar to become Field Museum president

CHICAGO (AP) — The Field Museum in Chicago has a new president.

The museum announced Tuesday its board of trustees appointed University of Oregon professor Richard Lariviere (lah RIV’ yair) to the position. Lariviere replaces John McCarter, who is retiring.

Lariviere is a Sanskrit scholar and professor of Sanskrit and Indian Studies at the university. The 62-year-old also was president of the University of Oregon from 2009 to 2011. He has also served as executive vice chancellor and provost at the University of Kansas and dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas.
