Royal Oaks Golf and Country Club of Vancouver received several honors recently.
Royal Oaks was selected as facility of the year by the Oregon Golf Association.
Additionally, its golf shop was awarded “merchandiser of the year.”
Bill Kim, the membership and marketing director for Royal Oaks Country Club, said the facility of the year honor was recognition for the club’s community involvement.
Kim said that the club raised over $10,000 for The American Heart and Stroke Walk and more than $150,000 for local military families with its American Turkey Shootout event. Kim added that the club is awarding two high school scholar athletes with a free membership to Royal Oaks.
Caldera wins local bout
Lorenzo Caldera defeated 2012 Washington and Nevada Golden Gloves champion Jerrell Barbour by unanimous decision in a lightweight match during an amateur boxing show Dec. 15 at JRT Boxing and MMA.
Caldera, 19, is a Portland resident who trains at JRT Boxing in Vancouver. He and Connor Morales, another Portland boxer who trains at JRT Boxing, are scheduled to compete at the USA Boxing nationals in 2013.

Santiago Franco (Knott Street Gym in Portland) won by decision over Angelo Lavato (Tacoma Boxing Club);
Jacob Torres (Capitol Boxing Club, Salem) won by decision over Angel Martinez (Beaverton PAL);
Jovani Romero (Mendez Boxing Club, Springfield, Ore.) won by decision over Kalani Nudera (Fisticuffs Gym, Vancouver);
Jose Gonzalez (JRT Boxing) won by decision over Harvey Cuevas (Tacoma Boxing Club);
Edward Ramos (Tacoma Boxing Club) won by decision over Blawais Eaglepipe (503 Boxing Club, Salem).
Evergreen Curling Club
A berth in the junior national curling championships will be on the line when a team from Denver takes on the Evergreen Curling Club squad that includes curlers from Portland and Vancouver.
The competition is scheduled for Friday through Sunday at the Evergreen Curling Club’s new home in Beaverton, Ore. The club, which used Mountain View Ice Arena when it formed in 2002 and has called Lloyd Center home in recent years, recently completed construction of its own dedicated curling ice.
The new venue at 10950 SW Fifth St., Suite 155 in Beaverton, has hosted some California teams since opening in early December. The club has scheduled an open house to introduce the new ice to the public on Jan. 5.
