American Joe Gyau makes debut for Hoffenheim

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — American forward Joe Gyau made his debut for Hoffenheim on Wednesday night in a 1-0 loss to second-division Greuther Fuerth in the quarterfinals of the German Cup.

The 19-year-old from Silver Spring, Md., entered in the 79th minute in place of American midfielder Fabian Johnson, joining fellow American Daniel Williams on the field for Hoffenheim. Gyau’s father, Phillip, made six appearances for the U.S. team and his grandfather, Joseph, played for Ghana.

Olivier Occean scored in the 44th minute for Greuther Fuerth.

Bayern Munich reached the semifinals by winning 2-0 at Stuttgart on goals by Franck Ribery in the 30th minute and Mario Gomez in the 46th. Borussia Moenchengladbach defeated Hertha Berlin 2-0 in overtime on Filip Daems’ penalty kick in the 101st and Oscar Wendt’s goal in the 120th.

Borussia Dortmund won 4-0 at fourth-tier Holstein Kiel on Tuesday.
