Letter: Even with COLA, no relief for seniors

The Columbian

It’s true — getting old isn’t for sissies. I’m a 74-year-old disabled widower who is trying to get along on Social Security benefits and Washington state’s EBT card. When Congress finally awarded a long-awaited cost of living adjustment, I was about to jump (well, maybe not jump) for joy, and then the other shoe dropped. I got a letter from the Washington state Department of Social and Health Services stating my EBT benefit — a whopping $62 — is now reduced to $16 because of the COLA. So, one arm of government gives and the other takes away. And I was hoping 2012 would be better than 2011. I just want some relief.
