A La Center Middle School basketball player who died last week will be honored before Thursday afternoon’s season-opening basketball game, school officials said.

Cody Sherrell died Monday, Jan. 9, at Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel in Portland, six days after collapsing at the end of his team’s first practice of the season. The 14-year-old suffered sudden cardiac arrest, doctors said.

Admission to Thursday’s game against Hockinson Middle School will be free, school officials said. Attendees are asked to make donations to Cody’s family to help them cover medical expenses. The game starts at 5 p.m.

At 4:30 p.m., the school will hold a ceremony in Cody’s honor. His Kobe Bryant sneakers and No. 24 jersey — the same number as the Los Angeles Lakers star, his favorite player — will be displayed. This was Cody’s first year playing on the school team.

You can donate to Cody’s family at any area Columbia Credit Union.

Check back for updates on the ceremony later Thursday evening. You can also follow @col_smallcities on Twitter for updates.
