Hawaii downs Idaho in back-and-forth game 76-70

MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) — Joaquim Vander scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds to help Hawaii beat Idaho 76-70 on Saturday night.

Zane Johnson and Joston Thomas added 16 apiece as Hawaii (12-9, 4-3 WAC) rebounded from a loss against Utah State on Thursday night.

Djim Bandoumel had a career-high 24 points and Stephen Madison added 15 for Idaho (11-10, 4-3 WAC). Hawaii’s win marked the first time it defeated Idaho at home since 2008.

Idaho trailed by three with 1:14 remaining, but missed two 3-pointers down the stretch. Hawaii would convert 8 of 9 free throws to seal the win.

The game saw seven lead changes and seven ties. Hawaii Shot 56 percent and Idaho shot 48 percent.

The Vandals made only five 3-pointers, which was well below their season average. Idaho is leading the WAC in 3-point shooting percentage at a clip of 40.9 percent.
