Resurfacing work will close a large section of southbound Interstate 5 and several ramps in Portland throughout this weekend, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Crews will shut down southbound I-5 between the Fremont Bridge and the Marquam Bridge from 11 p.m. today to 5 a.m. Monday. The weekend-long closure is needed to resurface a one-mile stretch of the freeway between Northeast Holladay Street and the Marquam Bridge, according to ODOT.

One weekend won’t finish the job, according to ODOT. This is only the first of five weekend closures planned for I-5 — two southbound, two northbound and a fifth to be determined.

This weekend’s southbound closure will also shut down several ramps to keep drivers out of the work zone. Cars won’t be able to connect from Interstate 84 westbound to I-5 southbound, Interstate 405 to I-5 southbound, or I-5 southbound to I-84 eastbound. The work will also close I-5 southbound onramps at the Rose Quarter and Greely, according to ODOT.

Drivers passing through Portland southbound can still use I-405 to get around the construction.

I-5 closures are planned for each of the next four weekends. The fifth would come on the weekend of Aug. 17 if necessary, according to ODOT.
