AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand yacht Camper won the in-port race during the Auckland stopover for the Volvo Ocean Race on Saturday, beating Puma by 54 seconds.
Camper, skippered by Chris Nicholson, got off to a strong start and led throughout the race in Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour. The win was its first in five in-port races.
Camper earned six points with the win. Overall race leader Telefonica of Spain finished last.
Telefonica leads the global race with 122 points, followed by Groupama at 107, Camper at 104 and Puma at 83. The next leg from Auckland to Itajai, Brazil, starts Sunday.
The race is scheduled to finish in Galway, Ireland, on July 8, nine months and more than 39,000 nautical miles after setting out from Alicante, Spain.
