OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich won’t be running for Congress in Washington state.

In an email sent to supporters Wednesday, Kucinich wrote that he’s decided “that, at this time, I can best serve from outside the Congress.”

Kucinich had been weighing a run in the state after he lost his Democratic primary in Ohio in March. He sent out a survey in April asking supporters for input on the decision.

Washington state Democratic Party chair Dwight Pelz had made clear he didn’t want Kucinich making the switch to the West Coast.

Kucinich sought the Democratic nomination for president in 2004 and 2008. The 65-year-old has roots in his hometown of Cleveland, where he was mayor and first ran for city council at age 21.

Washington has three open congressional seats this year.
