Local athletes and police escorts ran a Special Olympics torch from downtown Vancouver to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office West Precinct, near the Clark County Event Center at the Fairgrounds, on Wednesday morning.

Athletes, families and police met in front of the Clark County Courthouse around 9 a.m. before leaving on the about 11-mile trip. They ran north on Franklin Street, eventually making their way to Main Street, Northeast Hazel Dell Avenue, Northeast Highway 99 to Northeast 179th Street.

Battle Ground and Vancouver police provided escort. Clark County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue volunteers helped transport runners.

Washington Special Olympics 2012 Summer Games start at Joint Base Lewis-McChord on June 1.
