PORTLAND — Nic Petan had two goals and an assist Wednesday as the Portland Winterhawks beat the Vancouver Giants 3-0 at the Rose Garden.

The game in front of 5,395 fans was a homecoming for Giants left wing Trevor Cheek. It was only the second time the Vancouver, Wash., native has played in Portland. He is in his third Western Hockey League season.

Cheek had several opportunities from close range denied by Portland goalie Brendan Burke, including one on the first shift of the game. It was Burke’s first career shutout.

Portland (18-4-1) scored once in each period and outshot Vancouver (7-16), 42-18. The Giants managed only four shots on goal in each of the last two periods. Vancouver goalie Payton Lee played a strong game, stopping 39 of the 41 shots he saw,

Ty Rattie also scored for Portland, and Petan’s second goal was a game-clinching empty-netter.

The Winterhawks host the Kootenay Ice at 3 p.m. on Friday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
