CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers selected another defensive tackle in the second round of the NFL draft, taking Kawann Short from Purdue with the 44th overall pick.

The move comes after Carolina selected defensive tackle Star Lotulelei from Utah in the first round Thursday night.

The 6-foot-3, 308-pound Short started 50 straight games for the Boilermakers and had 19.5 sacks during his college career.

Short adds to the team’s growing defensive line rotation inside. He’ll play between improving defensive ends Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy, who both finished last season with double digits in sacks.

The Panthers finished 14th in the league against the run last season.

Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman reiterated that he believes championships are won with big bodies up front and says it was an area of need.
